ll over the UK in schools, colleges, universities and workplaces, Sikhs are being questioned on their faith especially by Muslims and Christians who wish to convert them. There's nothing new about preachers and missionaries. Thus, this article answers one of the commonly used argument that Guru Nanak Dev Ji was a Muslim to trick Sikhs who are not educated about Sikhi.

Our Aim

Our aim is to arm our youth with the knowledge to understand the power of Bani (Guru’s words) and send these preachers on their way. The message is that we should be grateful to be a Sikh, not proud, since we didn’t make Sikhi. The missionaries and preachers try to confuse people. The biggest way to confuse is by saying that Guru Nanak Dev Ji was a Muslim. They say that he had a cloak with Islamic words on it. He went to Mecca. Then they ask, how many Sikhs do you know that go to Mecca?

Who Was Guru Ji?

Guru Ji wasn't a Hindu, Muslim or Sikh. Guru Ji was enlightened by God directly. Guru Nanak Dev Ji was the first Guru and God was Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s Guru.

Guru Nanak Dev Ji Visited Many Holy Places

Tell people that just because Guru Ji went to Mecca, does not make them a Muslim. Guru Ji went to many other holy places and spent time with religious people of other faiths such as

  • Tibetian Buddhist in Tibet
  • Sri Lankan Buddhists
  • Went to Haridwar
  • Went to Jagannath Puri
  • Hinduism, Buddhism, Christianity, Jainism
  • Went to Rome

By that logic, it would make Guru Ji a Christian, a Hindu, a Buddhist, etc. They would be in every religion and group that they visited. It doesn’t make any sense.

Guru Ji Would’ve Been Killed

If Guru Nanak Dev Ji was a Muslim, they would've killed Guru Ji for being a bad Muslim. What kind of Muslim puts their feet in the water and tells people to drink it to become a Sikh? What kind of Muslim tells people to Matha Tek (bow down in respect) to them and not towards the Kaaba? Guru Ji was telling people to read Japji Sahib (First Sikh prayer recited daily) in the morning and Rehraas Sahib (evening daily prayer) and not the Panj (five) Namaaz (Muslim prayer). Guru Nanak Dev Ji wrote Gurbani for the people to read. This does not sound like a very good Muslim.

If an average Muslim in Saudi Arabia tried to do that right now, what's going to happen to them? Somebody will sit next to them with a knife and chop their head off. Guru Ji’s Karni (actions) does not match what a Muslim would do.
