Who is Bhai Prahlaad Singh Ji?

Bhai Prahlaad Rai was a court poet of Guru Gobind Singh Ji in Paonta Sahib. Bhai Sahib was given the responsibility by Guru Gobind Singh Ji to translate 50 Upanishads from the Persian language to the Brij language. Dara Shikoh, the son of Jahangir, had translated these Upanishads from Sanskrit to Persian and based on these Persian copies, Bhai Sahib translated them into Brij.

Below is a line by line translation of the Rehitnama written by Bhai Prehlaad Singh. This outlines the code of conduct for a Khalsa (Initiated Sikh) as instructed by Guru Gobind Singh Ji.

ਦੋਹਰਾ

ਅਬਚਲ ਨਗਰ ਬੈਠੇ ਗੁਰੂ, ਮਨ ਮਹਿ ਕੀਆ ਬੀਚਾਰ

The Tenth Guru was sitting at Abchal Nagar (Sachkhand Sri Hazoor Sahib), a thought came into Their mind,

ਬੋਲਿਆ ਪੂਰਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ, ਕਰਿ ਨਮਸਕਾਰ ਕਰਤਾਰ । ੧ ।

The Perfect Guru spoke and bowed down to the Creator.

ਹੁਕਮ ਹੋਯਾ ਪ੍ਰਹਿਲਾਦ ਸਿੰਘ ਬਿਪ੍ਰ ਜਾਤ ਹੰਸਰਾਇ

They called for Bhai Prahlaad Singh, who is from the lineage of Hansrai,

ਨਿਕਟ ਬੁਲਾਯਾ ਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ, ਲੀਨਉ ਕੰਠ ਲਗਾਇ । ੨ ।

Guru Ji called him to come closer, and embraced Bhai Prahlaad Singh.

ਪੰਥ ਚਲਯੋ ਹੈ ਜਗਤ ਮੈਂ ਗੁਰ ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ

By the grace of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, Khalsa Panth (Collective of Initiated Sikhs) prevails in this world.

ਰਹਿਤ ਬਤਾਈੲ ਖਾਲਸੇ, ਸੁਣ ਭਾਈ ਪ੍ਰਹਿਲਾਦ । ੩ ।

ਚੌਪਈ

ਹੋਇ ਸਿਖ ਸਿਰ ਟੋਪੀ ਧਰੈ । ਸਾਤ ਜਨਮ ਕੁਸ਼ਟੀ ਹੁਇ ਮਰੈ |

The Sikh who wears a hat shall take birth and die as a leper for seven lifetimes.

ਜੋ ਸਿਖ ਗਲ ਮਹਿ ਤਾਗਾ ਮੇਲੈ । ਚੌਪੜ ਬਾਜ਼ੀ ਗਨਿਕਾ ਖੇਲੈ । ੪ ।

The Sikh who wears the thread (Janeou) around the neck, gambles or visits a prostitute,

ਜਨਮ ਸੁਆਨ ਪਾਵੈਗਾ ਕੋਟਿ । ਬੀਜਯੋ ਹਾਥ ਬੁਰਾ ਇਸ ਖੋਟ |

Shall be born and die as a dog a million times, as sowing an evil seed will yield only more evil.

ਪਾਗ ਉਤਾਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ਜੋ ਖਾਵੈ । ਸੋ ਸਿਖ ਕੁੰਭੀ ਨਰਕ ਸਿਧਾਵੈ । ੫ ।

The Sikh who eats after removing the turban, shall go to Kumbhipaak hell.

ਦੋਹਰਾ

ਮੀਣਾ ਔਰ ਮਸੰਦੀਆ, ਮੋਨਾ ਕੁੜੀ ਜੋ ਮਾਰ

Meenas (descendants of Prithi Chand), Masands (those who loot Sangat (congregation) and Gurdwara (Sikh Place of Worship), those who cut their hair or kill their daughters,

ਹੋਇ ਸਿਖ ਵਰਤਨ ਕਰਹਿ ਅੰਤ ਕਰੇਗਾ ਖੁਆਰ । ੬ ।

The Sikh who keeps interactions with these people shall suffer great insults.

ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਕੇ ਮੰਤ੍ਰ ਬਿਨ ਜਪੈ ਅਉਰ ਕੋਈ ਜਾਪ

Apart from Vaheguru mantra, the Sikh read other mantras,

ਸੋ ਸਾਕਤ, ਸਿਖ ਮੂਲ ਨਹਿ, ਬਾਚਤ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਮੁਖ ਆਪ । ੭ ।

That faithless person is not a Sikh; these words came directly from the Guru’s mouth.

ਮੇਰਉ ਹੁਕਮ ਮਾਨਹਿ ਨਹੀਂ, ਕਰਹਿ ਨ ਸਿਖ ਕੀ ਸੇਵ

Those who do not follow my commands and does not serve the Sikhs,

ਸੋ ਬੀਰਜ ਮਲੇਛ ਕੋ, ਪਰਗਟ ਪਛਾਨਹੁ ਭੇਵ । ੮ ।

Recognize that person as an unbeliever (of the Guru).

ਹੁਕਮ ਦੇਖਿ ਕਾਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਰਾਖੈ । ਗੋਲਕ ਗੋਪ ਮਿਥਿਆ ਮੁਖ ਭਾਖੈ |

Those who recognize my commands but do not follow them, steal money from the Guru’s money-box and speak falsehood,  

ਕਾਰ ਭੇਟ ਸੁਖ ਮੰਨਤ ਚੁਰਾਵੈ । ਐਸਾ ਸਿਖ ਗੁਰੂ ਨਹਿ ਭਾਵੈ । ੯ ।

Those who steal other's donations and offerings, are not pleasing to the Guru.

ਤੂਟ ਪਰਿਓ ਮਾਇਆ ਕੀ ਫਾਸੀ । ਭ੍ਰਮਤਾ ਫਿਰੈ ਲਾਖ ਚਉਰਾਸੀ |

Those who are caught in the noose of Maya will wander through the 8.4 million life forms.

ਸੋ ਬੀਰਜ ਮਲੇਛ ਕੋ ਜਾਨ । ਸੁਣ ਭਾਈ ਪ੍ਰਹਿਲਾਦ ਸੁਜਾਨ । ੧੦ ।

Recognise them as the seed of the sinners, listen O’ wise Bhai Prahlaad Singh.

ਗੁਰੂ ਖਾਲਸੇ ਆਦਿ ਲੋਂ, ਜੋ ਪਾਲੈ ਜਗ ਮੋਹ |

The Khalsa of the Guru, who protects this world,

ਸੋ ਸਾਕਤ ਨਰਕੀ ਸਦਾ, ਇਨ ਸੇ ਕਰੈ ਜੋ ਧ੍ਰੋਹ । ੧੧ ।

Whoever deceits them, will enter hell.

ਸੂਹੇ ਅੰਬਰ ਪਹਿਨ ਕਰ, ਜੋ ਨਾਸੇ ਨਸਵਾਰ |

Those who wears crimson colour, or uses snuff (powdered tobacco),

ਲਗੇ ਤਾੜਨਾ ਸੀਸ ਪਰ, ਸੁਨੀਏ ਨਰਕ ਮੰਝਾਰ । ੧੨ ।

will be beaten on their head and will go to hell.

ਬਿਨਾ ਜਪੁ ਜਾਪੁ ਜਪੇ, ਜੋ ਜੋਵਹਿ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ |

Those who eat without reciting Jap Ji Sahib and Jaap Sahib (First and Second Sikh prayer recited daily),

ਸੋ ਬਿਸਟਾ ਕਾ ਕਿਰਮ ਹੁਇ, ਜਨਮ ਗਵਾਵੈ ਬਾਦ । ੧੩ ।

will live like a maggot and waste their whole life.

ਪ੍ਰਾਤਾ ਕਾਲ ਗੁਰ ਗੀਤ ਨ ਗਾਵੈ । ਰਹਿਰਾਸ ਬਿਨਾ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ਜੋ ਖਾਵੈ |

Those who do not sing Vaheguru's praises in the morning, and eat their meal without reciting Rehraas Sahib (Evening daily Sikh Prayer),

ਬਾਹਰਮੁਖੀ ਸਿਖ ਤਿਸ ਜਾਨੋ । ਸਭ ਮਿਥਿਆ ਤਿਸ ਮਾਨੋ । ੧੪ ।

Recognise them as superficial Sikhs, everything they say or do is false.

ਲਖ ਚਉਰਾਸੀ ਭ੍ਰਮਤਾ ਫਿਰੈ । ਬਾਰ ਬਾਰ ਜਗ ਜਨਮੈ ਮਰੇ |

They will be stuck in the cycle of 8.4 million life forms, going through birth and death again and again.

ਗੁਰੂ ਬਚਨ ਸਿਉ ਤੂਟਾ ਜਾਇ । ਦਰਗਹਿ ਤਾਂਕਉ ਮਿਲੈ ਸਜਾਇ । ੧੫ ।

Those who do not follow the commands of the Guru will be punished in the Guru's court.

ਦੋਹਰਾ

ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਕਉ ਛਾਡ ਕਰਿ, ਭਜੈ ਦੇਵ ਕੋਈ ਅਉਰ

Those who abandon the worship of Akaal Purakh, and start to worship other Gods,

ਜਨਮ ਜਨਮ ਭ੍ਰਮਤਾ ਫਿਰਹਿ, ਲਹਹਿ ਨ ਸੁਖ ਕੀ ਠਉਰ । ੧੬ ।

will wander through many cycles of births and will never find true peace.

ਪਾਹਨ ਕੀ ਪੂਜਾ ਕਰੈ, ਸਿਖ ਨ ਨਿਵਾਵਹਿ ਸੀਸ

Those who worship stones and do not treat another Sikh with respect,

ਸੋ ਸਾਕਤ ਨਿਗੁਰਾ ਸਦਾ, ਮਾਰਿਆ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਜਗਦੀਸ । ੧੭ ।

That person is forever without a Guru, proclaimed by Vaheguru.

ਕਰੀ ਥਾਪਨਾ ਜਾਸ ਕੀ, ਮੋਹ ਜੁ ਅਪਨੇ ਹਾਥਿ

Those who yearn for praise and claim to be equal to the Creator,

ਤਿਸ ਕੀ ਸਮਸਰ ਜੋ ਕਰੈ, ਜਰ ਜਾਵਹਿ ਕੁਲ ਸਾਥਿ । ੧੮ ।

Those who call themselves equal to the Creator, they, along with their lineage, will perish.

ਕਾਰ ਭੇਟ ਸੁਖ ਮੰਨਤ ਕਰ, ਜੋ ਸਿਖ ਚਿਤ ਭ੍ਰਮਾਇ

The Sikh who promises to make an offering, but later has doubts in the heart,

ਸੋ ਸਾਕਤ ਪਾਪੀ ਸਦਾ, ਬਿਕਟ ਰੂਪ ਹੋਇ ਜਾਇ । ੧੯ ।

That faithless person will forever be a sinner with a horrible-looking face.  

ਕੁੜੀਮਾਰ ਮਸੰਦ ਜੋ, ਮੀਣੇ ਕਾ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ

The food cooked by those who kill daughters, the Masands and the Meenas,

ਲਏ ਜੁ ਇਨ ਕੇ ਹਾਥ ਕਾ, ਜਨਮ ਗਵਾਵਹਿ ਬਾਦ । ੨੦ ।

Anyone who eats their food will waste their life in vain.

ਛਾਡ ਸਿਖਨ ਕੇ ਚਰਨ ਕਉ, ਲਏ ਪੰਥ ਜੋ ਅਉਰ

Those who abandon the sanctuary of Sikhi and follow another path,

ਐਥਹਿ ਓਥਹਿ ਦੁਖ ਲਹੈ, ਗੁਰ ਸਿਖਨ ਕੋ ਚੋਰ । ੨੧ ।

Those who leave Sikhi will be in pain here and hereafter.

ਮੜੀ ਗੋਰ ਦੇਵਲ ਜੋ ਮਾਨੈ, ਪਰ ਪੰਥਨ ਕੋ ਊਚ ਬਖਾਨੈ |

Those who worship tombs or idols, and speaks highly of this path,

ਸੋ ਸਾਕਤ ਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਸਿਖ ਨਾਹੀ । ਫਾਸਿ ਪਰਯੋ ਜਮ ਕੰਕਰ ਪਾਹੀ । ੨੨ ।

The faithless ones are not Sikh of the Guru, and they will be caught in the noose of death.

ਟੋਪੀ ਦੇਖਿ ਨਿਵਾਵਹਿ ਸੀਸ । ਸੋ ਸਿਖ ਨਰਕੀ ਬਿਸਵੈ ਬੀਸ |

Those who bow down to someone wearing a hat (Mughals/Turks) will be destined to hell.

ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਕੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰੈ । ਸੋ ਸਿਖ ਬੰਸ ਸਗਲ ਲੇ ਤਰੈ । ੨੩ ।

Those who serve Akaal Purakh, the Sikhs, together with their family shall go across this worldly ocean.

ਗੁਰੂ ਖਾਲਸਾ ਮਾਨੀਅਹਿ, ਪਰਗਟ ਗੁਰੂ ਕੀ ਦੇਹ

Accept the Khalsa as the Guru, this is the Guru’s physical body.

ਜੋ ਸਿਖ ਮੋ ਮਿਲਬੇ ਚਹਿਹ, ਖੋਜ ਇਨਹੁ ਮਹਿ ਲੇਹੁ । ੨੪ ।

The Sikhs who yearn to meet me, see me in the Khalsa.

ਕਾਨ ਕਟੇ ਅਰ ਤੁਰਕ ਕਾ, ਕਰੈ ਨ ਮੂਲ ਵਿਸਾਹੁ

Do not place faith in the yogis who pierce their ears, or in the Muslims,

ਜੋ ਸਿਖ ਸੋਂ ਹਿਤ ਨ ਕਰਹਿ, ਸੋ ਨਰਕੇ ਪਰਿ ਜਾਹੁ । ੨੫ ।

The Sikh who doesn't abide by this will go to hell.

ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਬਿਨਾ, ਰਸਨਾ ਰਟਹਿ ਜੋ ਹੋਰ

Apart from the True Guru's Bani, one who reads other hymns,

ਸੋ ਮਾਰਿਆ ਕਰਤਾਰ ਕਾ, ਪੜਾ ਨਰਕ ਮਧ ਘੋਰ । ੨੬ ।

They shall not be looked upon by the Creator and will enter hell.

ਛੇ ਦਰਸਨ ਕੀ ਜੋ ਮਤ ਧਾਰੈ । ਕੁਲ ਸੰਬੂਹ ਲੈ ਨਰਕ ਸਿਧਾਰੈ |

They who put faith in the six darshans of the Sanatan Dharam (ancient ways) are headed to hell with their whole lineage.

Note: Six Darshan (Six schools of philosophy)

1. Nyaya - Sage Gautam

2. Vaishesika - Sage Kanad

3. Samkhya - Sage Kapil

4. Yoga - Sage Patanjali

5. Mimansa - Sage Jaimini

6. Vedanta - Sage Ved Vyas

ਬਾਝਹੁ ਗੁਰ ਸਿਖਨ ਕਰੇ ਸੇਵਾ । ਮਿਥਿਆ ਮਾਨੋ ਸੁਰ ਨਰ ਦੇਵਾ । ੨੭ ।

Serve the Guru and the Guru's Sikhs, forsake the false idols.

ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਕੀ ਮੂਰਤ ਏਹ । ਪਰਗਟ ਅਕਾਲ ਖਾਲਸਾ ਦੇਵ |

The physical form of Akaal Purakh is the Khalsa.

ਯਾਮੇਂ ਰੰਚ ਮਿਥਿਆ ਨਹਿ ਭਾਖੀ । ਗੁਰ ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰ ਅੰਗਦ ਸਾਖੀ । ੨੮ ।

I do not speak even an iota of lies, just like Guru Nanak and Guru Angad are One; They bear witness.

ਦੋਹਰਾ

ਲੈਣਾ ਦੇਣਾ ਖਾਲਸੇ, ਆਨ ਦੇਵ ਸਭ ਝੂਠ

Receive and give to the Khalsa; to give to others is false.

ਅਉਰ ਦੇਵ ਇਵ ਮਾਨੀਏ, ਜਿਉਂ ਬਾਰੂ ਕੀ ਮੂਠ । ੨੯ ।

Recognize that these gods are impermanent,  like sand falling through the fist.

ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਕੇ ਬਚਨ ਸਿਉਂ, ਪਰਗਟ ਚਲਾਯੋ ਪੰਥ

Through the command of Akaal Purakh, this Panth (path) was started.

ਸਭ ਸਿਖਨ ਕੋ ਬਚਨ ਹੈ, ਗੁਰੂ ਮਾਨੀਅਹੁ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ । ੩੦ ।

All the Sikhs are given the command to accept Guru Granth Sahib as your Guru.

ਥਾਪ ਚਲਯੋ ਜੋ ਜਗਤ ਮੈਂ ਤਿਨਹਿ ਨਿਵਾਵਉ ਮਾਥ

Guru Granth Sahib has been installed in this world, bow down to Guru Granth Sahib,

ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਕੇ ਮੰਤ੍ਰ ਬਿਨ, ਮਿਥਿਆ ਸਾਰੀ ਗਾਥ । ੩੧ ।

Apart from the Vaheguru Mantar (mantra), all singing is false.

ਸਿਖ ਕਉ ਸਿਖ ਜਉ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਦੀਨਾ । ਕੋਟਿ ਅਸੁਮੈਧ ਜਗ ਫਲ ਕੀਨਾ

When a Sikh initiates another Sikh with Amrit, the blessings are more than thousands of horses sacrifice (Asumaidh).

ਜੋ ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਸਿਖ ਗਾਵੈ । ਜੀਵਨ ਮੁਕਤ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਪਾਵੈ । ੩੨ ।

The Sikhs who sing the Guru’s hymns find liberation in their lifetime.

ਚਾਪੀ ਕਰੋ ਮਲਹਿ ਸਿਖ ਚਰਨਾ । ਤਿਸ ਸਿਖ ਕੋ ਮੈਂ ਲੀਨੋ ਸਰਨਾ

The Sikh who massages the feet of another Sikh, I take that Sikh into my sanctuary.

ਕਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ਸਿਖ ਮੁਖ ਪਾਵੈ । ਤਿਸ ਸਿਖ ਪੈ ਗੁਰ ਵਾਰਨੇ ਜਾਵੈ । ੩੩ ।

The Sikh who feeds another, The Guru is always a sacrifice to that Sikh.

ਰਹਿਰਾਸ ਸਮੇ ਗੁਰੂ ਹੁਕਮ ਕੋ, ਪਢਹਿ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਸਤ ਭਾਉ

This is the command of the Guru, recite Bani with love and faith,

ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਸਹਿਤ ਰਸਨਾ ਰਟਹਿ, ਪਰਗਟ ਮਿਲਹਿ ਮੁਹਿ ਆਉ । ੩੪ ।

Those who recite it with love, I will come and bless them with my darshan.

ਬਚਨ ਪ੍ਰਤੀਤ ਰਖਹਿ ਸਿਖ ਜੋਈ । ਤੈਸੋ ਹੀ ਫਲ ਪਰਾਪਤ ਹੋਈ

The Sikh who follows the command of the Guru will obtain fruits of blessings.

ਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਬਚਨ ਗੁਰੂ ਕੀ ਮੂਰਤ, ਭੁਗਤ ਮੁਕਤ ਵਰ ਸਾਚੋ ਪੂਰਤ । ੩੫ ।

The Guru’s words are the Guru’s form; from this, one receives all blessings and wealth.

ਰਹਿਣੀ ਰਹਹਿ ਸੋਈ ਸਿਖ ਮੇਰਾ, ਵਹ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਮੈਂ ਉਸ ਕਾ ਚੇਰਾ

The one who follows the code of conduct is my Sikh, and they are my Master and me, their disciple.

ਕਰਹਿ ਅਕਾਲ ਪੁਰਖ ਕੀ ਆਸਾ । ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਕਟ ਡਾਰੈ ਫਾਸਾ । ੩੬ ।

Place your hope only in Akaal Purakh, and your noose of the cycle of birth and death will be cut.

ਸਤਿ ਅਕਾਲ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ, ਧਰਮ ਬੀਜ ਯਹ ਮੰਤ

The true Akaal Purakh, Sri Vaheguru, is the root mantar.

ਸਰਬ ਜਾਪ ਕਉ ਜਾਪੁ ਇਹ, ਕਹਿਓ ਆਦਿ ਅਰ ਅੰਤ । ੩੭ ।

The most excellent recitation of Mantar is the recitation of Vaheguru Mantar, which is true in the beginning and end.

ਸੰਬਤ ਸਤ੍ਰਹ ਸੈ ਭਏ, ਬਰਖ ਬਵੰਜਾ ਨਿਹਾਰ

ਮਾਘ ਵਦੀ ਥਿਤਿ ਪੰਚਮੀ, ਰਵਿਵਾਰ ਸੁਭ ਵਾਰ । ੩੮ ।

In the month of Maagh, the fifth day of the waning of the moon, the blessed day of Sunday.
